Who We Are

We are a Social Club based in Chicago.

Our mission is to improve the social, mental and physical health of our community through movement and play.

Learning to connect with others has a practically never-ending list of benefits, and we strive to share these with you in a stress free, welcoming, and big fun kind of way.

It’s never been more important to invest in your social skills— making new friends, getting out of your comfort zone, practicing respectful physical touch and conversation, taking up space, expressing yourself privately and publicly… nerve wracking tasks maybe, BUT the best things to do for yourself and your wellness long term.

You’re invited to attend social dance and fantasy events, book one-on-one coachings, hire a Dance Master for a special occasion, or simply follow us online @firststepsocialchicago.

No matter your skill level, age, or body shape, we hope to see you out there!

Meet Founder Rosalind Phelps (she/her)

Rosalind is a Social Dance Educator, Dance Master for Events, and an all-around Creative Generalist.

She grew up in Oregon, and loved adventures in the great outdoors, and in literature, and asked for tap dance lessons at the age of 4. She was a Theater Kid in high school and decided to attend the University of Washington’s School of Drama. There she performed, directed, and choreographed, and acted as Executive Director of the Undergraduate Theater Society, honing her creative eye and passion for bringing people together.

After graduation, she became Director of Operations for a prominent Seattle restaurant group while teaching wedding dance lessons on the side. Once the “unprecedented times” started rolling in, it was now and never, and she moved to Chicago to pursue a childhood dream of Professional Ballroom Dancing.

In 2022, she won Top Newcomer at the Arthur Murray World Dance-O-Rama and proceeded to travel across the country competing professionally. Along the way, she realized her greatest joy wasn’t competition—it was community parties.

All kinds of themes, music, games and dancing. All ages. All body types. All walks of life.

Now, Rosalind is building First Step Social to be an accessible, inclusive, community-centered space where anyone can learn to dance, can practice being seen and taking up space, and enjoy the special flavor of energy that is created when people are brave, silly, and unified together.

She also is a Fantasy nerd and loves designing and hosting historical, whimsical dream events for First Step Social.

Her “reach for the stars dream” besides leading FSS full-time, is to broadly re-popularize partner and group dancing as a means of mending the growing political divide in this country.

You can find her out in Chicago dancing to live swing and salsa music many nights a week, and partying with the LGBTQIA+ community. When she’s not dancing/teaching/hosting, she enjoys travel, dress up, and messing about in boats.
